How bad do you want it?

welnet trans form

I recently asked myself 3 questions as I looked at 2017. What do I want? How do I plan to get what I want? How bad do I want it? These questions are great because they can be used for anything. I chose to apply them to my professional life.

What do I want? This was an easy answer for me and has been for the better part of 2 decades. I want Quality Physical Education (#QPE) for all students. #QPE means a lot of different things to many in the #physed profession, but I don’t think anyone would argue that it should incorporate motor skill development, increase fitness levels, stress social and emotional learning and integrate fitness/health knowledge. I want #QPE for ALL students.

How do I plan to get what I want? Sticking with the script would mean that I will continue to design curriculum materials, work to enhance our software and keep getting on planes to work with educators on #QPE. The problem with this plan is that I don’t have the ability to move our profession forward fast enough and this bothers me. I’ve always struggled with patience. To speed up the process, I have decided to offer WELNET Single School Solution (SSS) FREE to any educator for the second semester of this school year. Every module we have is FREE and available to use. I plan on getting #QPE to ALL students by giving away WELNET for FREE to anyone who believes it could help them meet their objectives.

How bad do I want it? I want #QPE for all students REALLY BAD! This is why all of WELNET is FREE for the next 6 months. I understand money is an issue for PE Teachers, but #QPE should not be about money. It is about providing our youth with the physical, cognitive and emotional skills necessary to not only survive but also to thrive in the 21sr century. I want #QPE for ALL students SO BAD that I am willing to give WELNET away for FREE to all educators.

What do you want? How do you plan on getting what you want? How bad do you want it? If you want what I want, then try out WELNET,  it’s FREE! Your have absolutely nothing to lose and #QPE to gain.

Activity Logs: That Was Easy

Alex O’Brien asks two students to fill out a WELNET® Activity Log without giving them any other instruction. In the above video we see how easy it is for students to log and track their activity.

WELNET® was the first web-based software program for Health and Physical Education, and still the most comprehensive software available. If you are interested in demoing this powerful software in your school or district CLICK HERE and watch your physical education program continue to grow. Mostly importantly, you will be able to solidify that your program is showing student growth in health and fitness concepts, as well as overall physical literacy.

Share your PE Techno-Savvy!

By: Jabet Wheeler

In today’s technology age, PE instructors not only need to be sound in skill development and content knowledge, but also techno-savvy to support the new approaches to learning. Regardless of the mixed reviews regarding the value of “distance” or “online” courses we can be assured that there will be more and more school districts adopting these practices. There is also a plethora of other technology uses that have crept into the gymnasium including; teaching from tablets, recording student fitness scores on your smart phone, utilizing the newest activity and heart rate monitors, interactive video activity leaders and on and on…

To be competitive in the Physical Educator job market and highly evaluated in our own positions, in addition to modernizing our curriculum, we also need to make sure that the Physical Education profession is up to date on how to meaningfully integrate technology in support of student learning. We need to become more purposeful; be content experts AND be technically sound.

We’d love to hear some of your “winners” and “losers” in bringing technology into your Physical Education classes so we can all learn from each other’s successes and avoid the mistakes. Are you embracing new technology and why or why not? Share some of your recent experiences and tell us how they worked out.

Student Growth in New York

Building a Quality Physical Education (#QPE) program is a daunting task, to say the least. Sustaining #QPE is equally challenging. Three years ago North Babylon School District (NBSD) in New York received a PEP grant. Through the resources they were able to acquire with the PEP grant funds, K-12 teachers and administrators have logged countless hours of work for the benefit of the students in the NBSD. Part of that work was making the choice to adopt the Five for Life® curriculum K-12, and using WELNET® software. Through the use of the Five for Life® curriculum and professional staff development, QPE teachers have introspectively looked at their program and built a common plan. This plan allows the teachers to work toward the objectives of the state standards as the student master those objectives. WELNET® has housed their student data and as a result, they have been able to show significant gains in MVPA and cognitive development in their #QPE program.
We are proud of how far NBSD has come, and look forward to a bright future with healthy, educated students as the goal!
